The Library Program
The NAHS Collection and Space
The NAHS Library is located on the 4th Floor (Room 413) and has a large commons area with tables, popular with students to study or sit and read during class breaks. The library has over 15,000 titles and serves around 1000 students and staff. The collection is divided up into four areas, designated by color (see maps link) and then by genre.
At NAHS, we believe that reading strengthens learning and is essential to personal development. Our goal is life-long learners and readers. Time is carved out in our instructional program for students to read during the day, but we hope that it does not end there; that encouragement from the home will extend that commitment to reading into their personal time.
Inclusive and Broad Collection
The Identity Central collection, which faces the commons area, provides a clear inclusiveness to the collection, letting our students know that all communities are represented. Our collection celebrates the diversity of our student body with books for the various community-based ethnic, gender, and religious oriented identities. See the Identity Central Map for details.
NAHS students have access to books at a range of levels. Some books are for struggling readers and some for advanced readers. We have graphic novels, biographies, popular genres of fiction like romance and horror, and of course, many non-fiction books with information for learning and research or philosophy. Students are also given links and tools to check out E-books online with the LA Public Library (LAPL).
Some books are geared towards adults and students have the unique opportunity to check-out materials at the university library through our partnership with California State University at Northridge (CSUN), which is right next door. See the links for more information.
